News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

Head Boy at Saint Gregory’s Catholic College in Bath, Joshua L, has been selected to take part in this year’s Bath Young Musician of the Year Awards at the Pump Room, Bath.

The event, on Tuesday 6 November, will celebrate the musical talents of high achievers in this year’s Midsomerset Festival and allow young performers to demonstrate exceptional musicianship to a packed audience and panel of expert judges.

A-level student Joshua is one of only five performers selected for this coveted award and is excited at the prospect of performing in such a high-profile competition. He is currently working towards A-level examinations in maths, physics and further maths, with the hope that results in the summer will secure him a place at Southampton University to study Engineering.

Joshua said, “I feel so privileged to have been selected for the award. The competition in the Midsomerset Festival earlier this year was excellent and so it was a real surprise to receive the email inviting me to take part! I have until September to decide on a piece to perform and will then be practising whilst also starting my degree course at university.”

Speaking of Joshua’s musical talents, Head of Music at Saint Gregory’s, Hannah Townsend, commended, “Joshua is an exceptional musician and is a great role model for younger students. He works tirelessly to perfect his performances and demonstrates a highly developed understanding and technical expertise in the subject.”

Acting Headteacher, Mr Kevin McDermott, added, “This is a well-deserved achievement for Joshua and we are very proud of his achievements. He has always been an exceptional musician and this nomination is a great testimony to his hard work and dedication to music over a number of years. He is a wonderful ambassador for both young musicians across the city and his school and we wish him every success in the competition.”

This nomination follows the success of Year 9 student, Atticus L, who was awarded this year’s Bath Young Actor of the Year Award in October, demonstrating the considerable success of the school’s dedication to its specialism in the performing arts.
