News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

The pupils at St Michael’s Junior School in Bath have been having even more fun at playtimes due a new muddy zone. As headteacher, Clare Green, explains, the new resource is part of the school’s partnership with OPAL – the Outdoor Play and Learning initiative.

“We value play and are ensuring we meet article 31 of the UN convention which entitles children to the opportunity for daily play,” said Clare. “Other schools within the Bath & Wells Multi Academy Trust, such at St Saviour’s Juniors in Bath, have already become a platinum school within the scheme, which clearly defines stages in providing the conditions for great play and universality addressing children’s well-being and rights. In line with this, we are keen to develop our play spaces, opportunities and experiences over the next 18 months.

“This involves using all our available space, every day, whatever the weather! I am in the process of purchasing ponchos and we have lots of wellies so we can use our field. We are also asking local business to donate guttering, pallets, tyres etc for play. In addition, we have received whole staff training and set up a steering group of SLT, teacher, TA, Governor and parent.

“This programme has already totally transformed our lunchtimes- to see the children with sheer joy in their faces is a real privilege.”
