News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

The opportunity for mums to combine some much-needed ‘me-time’ with a chance to learn a musical instrument has been launched by local musician and mother of two.

Alexandra Bass is a highly qualified and experienced flautist who recognises that music lessons provide an ideal chance for busy mums to replenish themselves and have some fun in the process.

“Passionate about music, I started Mama’s Music as a way for my students to both learn a musical instrument and also to explore their creativity and self-expression, which is so important in an increasingly technological world,” Alex explained. “It is evident that this experience is also therapeutic for mamas who need some release from their full-on multi-tasking lives. The lessons allow them the chance to engage with a love of music and to learn a new skill in their own time.”

Mama’s Music offers flute and piano tuition, coaching in performance and stage presentation, as well as theory, aural and history of music, which all benefit from Alex’s skills developed over 35 years. In addition, Alex, who has a keen interest in her students’ progress at their own pace, is able to offer the patience, empathy and humour of a working mother, which allows their musical confidence to grow in a dynamic, fun and caring environment.

“Once they start on their musical journeys, the mamas learning music are then also in a better position to help with their own children’s music practice,” added Alex. “There is also the opportunity for the mamas to play duets and trios with other students in our musical community and to perform in our concerts.”

Alex will also be running a Musical Mama’s retreat, ‘Music, Meditation and the Magic of the Breath!’, at the Molino del Rey Yoga Retreat, in the Sierra des las Nieves nature reserve, Southern Spain, from August 17-23, 2020.
