The Rock Project, the UK’s largest rock school network, which teaches 7-18-year-olds how to play guitar, bass, drums and sing, is opening its doors at the Arc Theatre in Trowbridge in March.
The two-hour long after-school sessions see professional musicians tutor students to perform as a band. Mike Aris from The Rock Project explained that interest from parents and students in the Trowbridge area had convinced him to open a new school.
“We already run a busy session in Bath, but parents from Trowbridge made enquiries about a school in their area and so we felt the time was right to open here,” he said.
The weekly schools have separate sessions for juniors, aged 7-11, and seniors from 12 to 18 years old. For the first half of each session, students are tutored in their chosen instrument. During the second hour they put what they’ve learnt into practice and come together to play as a band.
Mike, who has a degree in music, plays in a number of bands himself including trumpet for The Rosa Gray Band and sings in the Base Notes, said he was excited by the enquiries coming in. “It’s fantastic to see students develop their love of music,” he explained. “Along with learning to play the music they love, it is genuinely inspiring to see how much The Rock Project students grow, both as musicians and in confidence, through taking part in sessions.”
The Rock Project has a network of more than 60 schools across the UK and Ireland, making it the country’s leading school for children’s contemporary music tuition. The new, weekly, sessions will start on March 7 at Arc Theatre, College Road, Trowbridge. Junior sessions take place from 5pm to 7pm with senior sessions running from 7pm to 9pm. All of the instruments are supplied.
