News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

Pupils from St Martin’s Garden Primary School in Bath recently enjoyed a visit from Ian Waller, the editor of The Bath & Wiltshire Parent, in order to find out more about the life of journalist.

Ian met Year 4 pupils from the school’s Acer and Pine classes, who quizzed him on his career in journalism as part of their English unit studies on newspaper reports. During the sessions, the children showed a real knowledge and interest in how newspapers and magazine work, as well as asking Ian a range of questions, including why he became a journalist, who was the most famous person he has interviewed and how long it takes to write a feature.

“I was so impressed with the enthusiasm and confidence of the children,” explained Ian. “They clearly already had a firm understanding of the role of a reporter, with a number expressing a desire to follow journalism as a career once they leave school.”

Class teacher Maya Mucunska added, “Ian’s visit gave the year 4 children a real life context for their learning. They were inspired by the interview to put their skills in practice and write great newspaper articles.”
