News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

Schools, nurseries and youth organisations in Bath, Wiltshire and Somerset – your hospital needs you! The Forever Friends Appeal – the fundraising charity for the Royal United Hospitals (RUH) in Bath – is inviting you to take part in Big Ted’s Day Out to help raise funds for Children’s Therapies at the Royal United Hospitals (RUH) Bath.

The fundraising day will take place on 18 October 2019 and Big Ted, the charity’s loveable mascot, will be making special guest appearances on the day to join in with the fundraising activities. Alternatively, you can organize your fundraising event for another day of the year that best suits you.

Lauren Noble, Senior Community Fundraiser, The Forever Friends Appeal, explained, “We would particularly like to see schools, nurseries, brownies, guides, scouts and other youth groups sign up to take part and help fundraise for the RUH.

“This year’s theme is celebrate your way – so it’s up to you, whether you organise a fancy dress day, bring a teddy into school, organize a film night, wear a silly hat, have a teddy bears picnic or do something else in exchange for a suggested £1 donation per person and have lots of fun along the way.”

Henry Latcham

The aim is to support Children’s Services by raising money to fund facilities and specialist children’s equipment for children like Henry (above). Henry has cerebral which affects the coordination and normal function of his muscles, particularly in his lower body and legs. Henry has a sunny personality and tries very hard with his physiotherapy sessions, which he’s been having at the RUH since he was 11 months old. Henry needs to use specialist seating standing and mobility equipment, and has a walking frame so he can play with his friends and move at school. The hospital is currently looking at different styles of walking frames to best suit Henry and other patients like him, to promote improvement in mobility skills and balance.

Emily Graham, Head of Children’s Therapies at the Royal United Hospitals Bath, said, “Donations from Ted’s Big Day Out will enable us to buy an extended range of toys and equipment to make children’s’ experience of therapy sessions more enjoyable and enhance our assessments to ensure they have the right equipment to help them play and move around.

“We intend to use the donated funds from Ted’s Big Day Out to purchase story sacks, interactive toys and specialist walking frames – these will make such a difference to our young patients.”

Interested in taking part? To find out more about Ted’s Big Day Out, register and request a free fundraising pack, visit www.tedsbigdayout.com or call 01225 824013. There is no limit to how many schools and families can take part, but the first 10 organisations to sign up will win an educational visit from Big Ted.

All kind donations will go a long way in helping Children’s Services across the hospitals. Alternatively, you can support another ward, department or campaign at the hospital that is close to your heart (see website for more information). Ted’s Big Day Out is a perfect opportunity for young people to learn about the value of helping others AND have lots of fun along the way.
