News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

King Edward’s School in Bath is sponsoring a forthcoming Bath Philharmonia concert that will enable children across B&NES to benefit musically.

Bath Philharmonia has offered 50 free tickets to each school in B&NES so that children and the next generation of musicians across the local community can attend the Bath Philharmonia concert with BBC Young Musician of the Year 2018 winner, Lauren Zhang on the 5 December at The Forum Bath.

The concert’s programme is perfect for a wide age range of children, with Mussorgsky’s Night on a Bare Mountain transporting concert-goers through vast thunderstorms and torrential rain, whilst Anna Clyne’s Night Ferry plunges audience members into mountainous seas, ferocious squalls and howling gales.

This is the second Bath Philharmonia Creative Learning Project to be supported by King Edward’s School with the aim of helping broaden local primary school access to orchestral music. In 2018 Bath Philharmonia and Classic Brit winner saxophonist, Jess Gillam, presented workshops funded by the PRS Foundation’s Resonate Scheme to pupils from St Keyna and Roundhill Primary Schools as part of Bath Philharmonia’s commitment to making orchestral music accessible to all.  King Edward’s supported the initiative by hosting the day’s events.

Commenting on the initiative Rupert Drury, Director of Music at KES, said, “It is wonderful that this concert will enable 50 pupils from every school in B&NES to access first-rate classical orchestral music through free tickets. To be able to support the introduction of new musical genres and watch inspirational young classical musicians such as Lauren in action, is a natural extension of King Edward’s School’s musical and artistic aims and is a further reflection of our commitment to the local community.”

Jason Thornton, Music Director of Bath Philharmonia, added, “Our concert brings together the whole community to experience world class music-making. We’re grateful to King Edward’s School and all our patrons and funders for helping to us to introduce fantastic orchestral repertoire to as many people as possible.”
