Shortly after starting his Year 13 studies at Saint Gregory’s, Bath, Ben Saunders faced a challenge no one could have predicted. Diagnosed with a rare form of cancer sarcoma attached to his heart and later spreading to his lungs, instead of a typical final year at school with his friends, Ben began a journey that included intensive chemotherapy and major surgery.
Devastatingly, last month, Ben passed away leaving behind a lasting legacy in his charity, the Ben Saunders Foundation, set up whilst receiving treatment himself, to raise money to support other young people with cancer. To date Ben’s foundation has raised almost £50,000, bringing his ambition of buying a holiday home to offer respite and sanctuary to families going through a similar journey, within reach.
Director of Sixth Form at Saint Gregory’s, Lucy Butler, said: “Ben is an inspiration to us all and he will be forever remembered by everyone at school for his smile, energy and generosity. He was a passionate sportsman who loved the performing arts. His ability to make those around him laugh and smile was infectious and his talents both on the football field and on stage ensured that, when with him, you would never forget him!”
“As a student he was always more interested in the welfare of others and Ben’s foundation represents what a truly remarkable, compassionate young man that he was and it is our duty to ensure that his amazing achievements live on in our school and the wider community.”
“Ben wanted to make the world a better place and with his kindness, bravery and integrity, he showed what was possible. We will continue his mission and work in his memory to ensure that his foundation flourishes so that those that need help, receive it.”
Earlier this month, Ben’s friends, family and teachers took part in a giant outdoor Zumba class, raising over £5,000 for Ben’s foundation. A number of Ben’s teachers will be running the 2021 Bath Half Marathon in support of the Ben Saunders Foundation and to raise more funds for this incredible cause.
The Ben Saunders Foundation will be the focus charity for this academic year.
