Two local mums, Kayleigh Allenby and Cress Wordsworth, have launched their own sustainable clothing business, Sissoo, offering a range of beautiful organic clothing in perfect time for Christmas.
Sissoo is a conscious clothing brand based in Frome and specialising in sustainably produced, organic, hand-block printed and naturally-dyed clothing. The Sissoo collection currently features the Beautifully Bohemian Range, with plans to expand into menswear, bags and children’s clothes in the Spring.
“Cress and I met at the school gates back in 2019 and connected over our mutual passion for ancient crafts, our love of Indian textiles and sustainable living,” explained Kayleigh. “Soon after we spontaneously flew off to Jaipur in India on a bold adventure to discover the ancient art of block printing and to begin our journey into the sustainable fashion industry.
“We were amazed by the ancient printing techniques used by the artisans of Jaipur who hand carve intricate designs into wooden blocks and then print by hand. We were also horrified after seeing the devastation caused by the fast fashion industry and modern printing manufacturers polluting the local rivers with their toxic waste.
“Feeling a call to change, we decided to create Sissoo, an all natural sustainable clothing company for women in the UK. We wanted to provide a conscious alternative to buy less and buy better. All our clothing is carefully designed to cause zero chemical waste, we only use vegetable dyes and every detail from start to finish has nature at its heart. What’s more, we are proud to be supporting the ancient art of block printing which has sadly been replaced by screen printing.”
