News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

A Bath family business is offering a great solution for mums and dads working from home or planning to start up their own business and are looking for a bit more space. Garden Rooms of Bath offers a great choice of bespoke stand-alone buildings that are ideally designed to act as an office, gym, art studio, home cinemas or even extra living space.

Garden Rooms of Bath is owned by parents of three Ed and Jo Barnes, who had the idea for the business during the first lockdown. “We were looking at ways that we could redirect our property business to fit the needs of our customers over the lockdown,” explained Ed. “With the increase in people needing to work from home, creating purpose built work spaces in the garden seemed like a perfect idea.

3D plans are created to make the best use of the space available

“As soon as we mentioned the idea to families across the Bath region, orders started coming in. The first enquiries were from mums who were starting a new business and needed a work space outside of the family home. Once somebody gets in touch, Jo will find out their exact needs, including the budget and use for the garden room, as well as any extras that might be needed. She then produces 3D plans that make the best use of the space available.”

Green roofs are just one of the eco features of the garden rooms

Ed added that the basic designs measure around two to two and half metres square, and take around three weeks to create. “All of the building work is done on site, and we cover all requirements, from the electrical requirements to insulation and even green roofs that include slow growing, water retaining plants. While some of our customers want to do their own decorating, if they prefer we can even complete that for them too.

A range of sizes is available to suit different uses for the garden rooms

“As the garden rooms are fully insulated, they can be used all year round. In addition, there are options for additional extras such as kitchenettes, a toilet and a choice of upvc or aluminium doors and windows. Basically we will adapt each design to whatever anyone wants, after all, these are very much bespoke designs.”

With prices for the garden rooms generally coming in at around £8,000-£12,500, Ed and Jo are initially focusing on working with families across the Bath region, as well as the surrounding towns and into West Wiltshire.
