News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

The children at King Edward’s Junior School and Pre-Prep and Nursery are lending their support to St Martin’s Garden Primary School in Bath as the latter seeks to fill its wonderful new library with books.

With a new library space complete and ready to go Mrs Claire Parfitt, Headteacher at St Martin’s Garden Primary School is leading a community drive to fill the library’s shelves with inspiring and engaging reads. “Books are so powerful as they allow you to dream, escape, think and they take you places”, said Mrs Parfitt.

Eager to help, the children at King Edward’s School are collecting some of their favourite reads from home, including picture books as well as fiction and non-fiction titles, and after a period of quarantine these will be delivered to St Martin’s for use in its new library and additional Key Stage 1 library area.

Mr Greg Taylor, Head Teacher at King Edward’s Junior School, added, “The library at King Edward’s Junior School is at the heart of our school, and plays a pivotal role in developing the children’s imagination, language and their curiosity of the world. We hope that a well-stocked library brings equal amounts of joy and inspiration to the children at St Martin’s Garden Primary School.

As well as donating books, the children at King Edward’s Junior School are also helping to collate the gathered books ahead of delivery, working in the Junior School library at lunchtimes to assemble the books and add ‘Why I Love This Book’ labels to the inside covers, to share some of the reasons why they loved a particular book.

Amelia, a Year 5 Library Helper at the Junior School, said, “I think the book drive it is really good idea because children will learn more about our language from all the different books.”

Tommy, in Year 5, said, “The more you read the more creativity you will have.”

Lucy, in Year 5, said, “It is a great idea to donate books because children and adults can experience new adventures when they read.”

With donated books already starting to flood in, the KES community hopes to deliver the books to St Martin’s at the start of the Summer Term.
