An online workshop for parents and carers to help them better understand the teenage brain is being held in November.

Teen Brain Matters will be an hour-long interactive online workshop examining the changes that occur in the brain during the teenage years and explores how these affect the way young people think, feel and behave.

Topics will include hormones, risky behaviour, the social brain and sleep. It will provide ideas on the role of parents and other adults in teenagers’ lives.

Councillor Dine Romero, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, Communities and Culture said: “Being a parent or carer can be great, with plenty of enjoyment, happiness and pride, but it can be hard work – especially as children grow into adolescence. Other than during the first three years of life, the brain goes through the biggest change in its development during adolescence. This valuable workshop helps us as parents better understand the changes our teenagers are going through – and what we can do to support them.”

The workshop is based on the work of Dr John Coleman, a psychologist with an international reputation for his work on the teenage years. Dr Coleman has presented this workshop for local authorities and charities across the country.

The workshop is being brought to residents by the council’s Public Health and Prevention Team as part of their ongoing support for young people’s mental health. It will be delivered by experts from the Charlie Waller Trust. It is free to parents and carers of teenagers attending schools in Bath and North East Somerset.
