A new company is offering skateboard training for all ages and all abilities across the Bath and Bristol region. Big Bro Skate Co is owned and run by Marcus Czemerys, a skateboard coach for three years and a skateboarder since the age of eight.
“My plan for Big Bro Skate Co is to introduce people of all ages to the amazing sport of skateboarding at competitive prices. My aim is to not only coach but also work as a mentor for the next generation of skateboarders, helping them to learn the valuable life skills and social behaviours that skateboarding taught me, including perseverance, determination and resilience, and to be part of the community that comes with it.
“I coached skateboarders as young as four years old and as old as 60. I have been skateboarding since I was eight years old, ever since my grandparents gave me a toy skateboard with Tomb Raider printed on the bottom. Between the ages of 10 and 15, I would spend every second of my free time skateboarding, with the sport giving me an outlet for me to escape the problems I was having at home and school, and be part of the amazing community that provided role models to help guide me through my struggles.
“Since this time I have served in the armed forces for five years, worked as a tour guide living abroad in Iceland and taught multiple disciplines such as skateboarding, scuba diving, snorkelling, physical training and footvolley. I believe my unique skills and life experience have given me all the tools I need to both teach and mentor people in the sport I love.”
When it comes to the skateboard training offered by Marcus, one-to-one lessons cost £15 an hour, with the lessons tailored to the needs of the skater. The skateboard, pads and helmet are all provided, with lessons taking part at skateparks and centres across the Bath and Bristol area, with a travel cost added to the fee..
“I understand that no two people are the same and everyone learns differently especially when it comes to skateboarding. Skateboarding is an expressive sport and everybody has their own style, whether it is wacky with unconventional tricks, gnarly old-school tricks done at high speed or technical wizardry focusing on executing everything crisp and clean. It’s great to be able to work with each individual to help them learn and find their unique style.”
