Lee Browne of Browne Gas and Heating offers expert advice to families about how a few steps can help to cut the cost of heating
With increases in energy bills only due to get worse and the cold days of winter just around the corner, it’s crucial for families to do all they can to ensure their home heating is working at its most efficient. Here are four basic procedures that everyone should consider to make sure that they’re staying as warm as possible without paying more than you need to.
- Make sure that your boiler is working both safely and efficiently by having it serviced every year. Not only is an annual service part of a boiler’s warranty, it is also a legal requirement in rented properties, while also helping to prevent any unwanted winter breakdowns and more costly repair bills.
A boiler service involves checking the gas pressure, the products of combustion, making sure that all of the seals are up to the job, ensuring that the flue works properly and cleaning out the condensate trap, as well as the system filter, if it has one. We’ll also check for any leaks, bleed any radiators that have air in them, then fire up the system to check that all of the heating and hot water works.
We’ll even test your carbon monoxide detector if you have one, and if you don’t, we can supply and install one.
- Poor water quality is the number one cause of central heating breakdowns. Having a chemical system flush cleans out the build up of debris in your central heating system, helping to maintain the life and efficiency of your boiler and radiators, and reduce your energy bills.
- When it becomes necessary to fit a new boiler, a condensing boiler is much more efficient and operates at over 90% efficiency, whereas an older non-condensing boiler (G rated) runs at 70% or less.
- By installing a Smart Control you could save 10-20% on your current heating bill.
