Mr Carter, a teacher and Science Co-ordinator at the Junior School of King Edward’s School, Bath, has been shortlisted for the Primary Curriculum Leader of the Year award in the TES Schools Awards 2023.
The annual awards recognise the very best teachers and schools from UK state and independents, including early years settings, primary and secondary.
TES editor and chief judge of the TES Schools Awards, Jon Severs, said, “With these awards we honour the education community, who we have served for over 112 years. This year has seen some incredibly high-quality entries. So every teacher and school who has been named in this shortlist should be very proud – it’s a fantastic achievement.”
Mr Carter leads a science curriculum which aims to encourage pupils to explore, make observations, ask questions and find answers through hands-on investigations in the Junior School’s dedicated science laboratory.
Alongside classroom learning, the Junior School Science programme places a strong emphasis on providing pupils with science trips and experiences that complement their learning. A range of activities allow pupils to explore science in different contexts, from visiting science centres such as We the Curious to engaging with animals in nature using the Junior School’s own pond and wild area.
Recent Science events at school have included an interactive exploration of the solar system in the company of Explorer Dome, and the opportunity to view and handle a selection of rocks from the Earth’s moon and space thanks to a loan from NASA and the Science Technology Facilities Council.
Greg Taylor, Head Teacher at King Edward’s Junior School, said, “We truly feel that the children at our school love science, which is testimony to the hugely engaging Science curriculum here at KES and the commitment and enthusiasm of our teachers, led by Mr Carter.
“We are very proud that Mr Carter’s hard work and efforts have been recognised by the judges of the TES Awards and wish him the very best of luck!”
The TES Schools Awards Winners will be announced on Friday 23 June.
