Students and staff from the Norland Community Sewing Bee welcomed The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Bath, Councillor Dine Romero, to the Bath Central Library to find out more about the Grenfell Memorial Quilt project.
Sewing lecturers Jo Price and Kate Jaeger welcomed the Mayor to see how the Norland Community Sewing Bee is working with the wider community to create a 12ft x 12ft panel that will make up part of the Grenfell Memorial Quilt. The entire quilt will be the same height as the Grenfell Tower, and is due for completion on the 10-year anniversary of the tragic event in 2027, with organisers hoping for the quilt to be hung in a prominent location.
The weekly sewing sessions at the Bath Central Library have been facilitated by Kate and Jo, who have not only provided their expertise, but also created a welcoming environment for volunteers of all skill levels to get involved in embroidering the quilt panel.
Mayor Romero expressed her appreciation for the initiative, emphasising the importance of communal projects like the Grenfell Memorial Quilt. “I was delighted to be asked to help and have added a version of my mayoral theme to this important piece of community art. I am embroidering the words ‘People are the beating heart of cities’ to one of the hot air balloons representing the SouthWest.”
The Norland Community Sewing Bee has extended an open invitation to members of the public to join them every Friday between 10 am-12 pm at the Bath Central Library as they work towards completing the Grenfell Memorial Quilt.
Whether experienced or novice, everyone is encouraged to participate in this collective act of remembrance. Any type of embroidery commemorating the tragedy is suitable, be that tributes, names or messages of support and solidarity.
