Fosse Way School receives WIRE award for promoting inclusivity in religious education

WIRE Award

The WIRE (Widening Inclusivity in RE) award has been presented to Fosse Way School in Westfield, Radstock by Westfield Councillor, Dr. Eleanor Jackson, alongside the Chair of Westfield Parish Council, Cllr Phil Wilkinson.

The school earned this accolade for enhancing inclusion in RE through various initiatives:

  • Hosting a member of the Bristol & West Progressive Jewish Congregation who led an interactive session with secondary classes. Students engaged with artefacts, tasted Challah bread and learned about the Jewish faith.
  • A member of the Fosse Way team, Naomi Mitchell, attended a tour of a Bath Mosque, which included a Q&A session with the Imam.
  • Having two primary classes of sensory students participate in the Spirited Arts RE competition by creating a collage that illustrates nature within manmade spaces.

All these activities took place during the 2023/24 academic year, making the school eligible for the award.

Fiona Skinner, Head Teacher at Fosse Way School, said, “The WIRE Award is significant to us because ensuring access to Religious Education for all our students is crucial. As a school catering to children aged four to nineteen with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), we face certain challenges in teaching, but this recognition demonstrates that everyone can learn about diverse faiths.”
