In Beckington, near Frome, Springmead School’s annual Science Fair was a resounding success, showcasing the scientific thinking through children’s individual projects. Each pupil chose a specific area of science to explore, designing experiments that were both informative and engaging for their peers, younger children and parents.
Projects ranged from how centrifugal force works to homegrown crystals and creating coloured kinetic sand to demonstrate blending. The children’s enthusiasm in explaining their hypotheses, methodologies and results to visitors demonstrated a clear understanding of the science going on in front of their eyes.
Younger pupils with sparked interest in science and in preparation to create their own experiments, were in awe. Parents also had the opportunity to engage with the children in the afternoon.
Science fair isn’t just about exploration and discovery, it is also a learning experience that fostered critical thinking and presentation skills. Each child was evaluated on their project’s scientific merit, the clarity of their presentation and their ability to answer questions about their work. A panel of class teachers carefully assessed each project with a written report.
“We are incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication shown by our children,” said Sally Cox, Headteacher at Springmead School. “The science fair is a wonderful opportunity for them to delve into topics that fascinate them and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. The quality of the projects this year was truly exceptional, demonstrating the children’s passion for science and their ability to think critically and creatively.”
