Free sixth form Philosophy Seminars coming to the BRLSI

BRLSI

Who am I? What am I doing here? Ever fancied becoming a philosopher? Umm! What is that exactly? Philosophy delves into fundamental questions about life, the world and a human’s place within it, and the great news is that anyone who wants to become a philosopher can be. You might just need a little bit of help to get started.

In which case, Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution has been running free Sixth Form Philosophy Seminars in conjunction with the Royal Institute of Philosophy for the past 15 years, hoping to equip 6th form students with broader and deeper world perspectives and help them to develop their critical reasoning skills.

Led by Calum Sims from the University of Bristol, these free weekly sessions explore the fundamental questions of philosophy, why it is important and its meaning in relation to everyday life.

This year’s series focuses on The Value of Self-Awareness and topics students will discuss include:

  • 30 April – Me, Myself and I
  • 7 May – Ourselves amongst Others
  • 14 May – The Networked Self
  • 21 May – Self-Awareness and Values
  • 28 May – Social Self-Awareness
  • 4 June – Self-Awareness for Change

The aim is to inspire young people to engage more broadly with the world and in the process make it a better place. Sessions take place every Wednesday between 30 April – 4 June 2025, at the BRLSI HQ in Queen Square, Bath. If it’s difficult to get to Bath for 5.30pm, then students can also join online.

Don’t worry if you’ve never tried philosophy before, all you need to do to take part is contact your Head of Sixth Form or teacher or email email hidden; JavaScript is required with your name and the name of your school. BRLSI look forward to hearing your ideas!
