Review – some mums me-time at the Bath Massage Company

Solo parent of one Georgie Crawshaw feels the benefits of an all body deep tissue massage

Mums might come in all shapes and sizes – but one thing we all have in common is not having enough ‘me time’.

So, as a totally solo parent (juggling another manic week of work, childcare, a broken washing machine and a cracked windscreen), I’ve decided to take matters into my own hands. Well actually – the expert hands of my therapist for today, Briony.

You see, I’m treating myself to a little pampering at the Bath Massage Company.

Conveniently based on George street, at the heart of the city centre, they’re just a five minute walk from both Charlotte Street and Broad Street car parks. To find them you’ll need to head to the back of Seasons Natural Health Store, which might seem a little strange at first. But it reminds me of C.S. Lewis’ infamous wardrobe – a magical portal to a forgotten world of essential oils and self-care. And you can even stock up on some of the natural skincare products, nutritional supplements or herbal remedies on offer while you wait.

Briony appears, barefoot and beaming smile, bang on my allotted appointment time and leads me down some candlelit steps to one of the two treatment rooms. I’m pleased to see there’s no white witches or talking lions on the other side – just a mini haven of tranquility and calm, a welcome retreat from the bustling chaos of Bath (and my life!)

Established in 2010, The Bath Massage Company prides itself on offering the very best in holistic massage and reflexology treatments. Their ‘menu’ features everything you’d expect, from relaxing top-to-toe Swedish massages to more targeted Sports versions, and a few you might not – acupressure facial anyone? For new mums (or soon to be mums) check out their Bump, Birth and Baby service which also offers a range of specialist courses from hypnobirthing to baby massage.

After a quick chat (how’s my sleep? I have a toddler – need I say more. Stress levels? See above re washing machine and windscreen) we settle on an all body deep tissue massage – focusing on my particular problem area, my back. There’s no ‘one size fits all’ approach here, explains Briony; whether you want to target particular aches and pains, or simply relax and unwind, each package is personalised and every experience is unique.

An hour later, and it’s time to return to reality. Now, I’m under no illusion that anyone can unravel the years of tension I’m carrying (not to mention intensive triathlon training and historic whiplash injuries) in one little appointment. But I do feel significantly more grounded than I’ve felt in a long time. Maybe not a new woman – but certainly a calmer, more carefree and re-energised version of myself.

And those stubborn knots in my shoulders? Well – I guess there’s only one answer for that. I’ll just have to find space in my diary for another dose of me time.

Prices start at £50 for a 30 minute appointment  – discounted treatment passes are available for block bookings. Appointments are bookable online at thebathmassagecompany.com
