St Andrew’s unveil its wonderful yarn bombed school tree

St Andrew's

A huge community effort at St Andrew’s Church School in Bath has resulted in a wonderful ‘makeover’ for a special school tree.

Knitters and crochet-ers from across the community responded to the school’s request for contributions to ‘yarn bomb’ the tree which sits right at the heart of the school (and is on the school logo!). The school was inundated with replies and was thrilled with the result, including Susan McDowall, a grandmother of two of the children at the school, who spent a month solidly knitting for the project!

“Children and adults alike love the colourful additions, which include flowers, pom poms, birds and bees,” said Deputy Headteacher, Tam Stephen. “As a school we were keen to offer an outdoor reflection place for the children and we came up with this idea to include as many people in our community, as well as the children.

“It has been a wonderful project and it is already well loved by us all. Staff sit under it for their lunch or a coffee, whilst the children access this space at lunchtimes and for outdoor learning time. I want to thank every one who contributed to the tree and especially those that were able to help with the final construction. It was a whole community effort, and the children have loved trying to find the piece made by their family or friend. This is now a real focal point for us all and a lovely space to reflect and ponder during a busy school day.

Comments from the pupils included, ‘”I love the colours,” “It makes me smile,” “It is so soft,” and :I feel joy when I look at it.”
