Families in south Bath are set to benefit from safer, greener journeys to school thanks to a major investment in the Scholars’ Way project. The West of England Mayoral Combined Authority will contribute nearly £3 million to the scheme, on top of almost £2.4 million already committed by Bath & North East Somerset (B&NES) Council.
The project, led by B&NES Council, is designed to improve walking, wheeling, and cycling routes between schools and residential areas, covering a total of one mile of upgraded paths. Improvements will include four new and two enhanced crossings, plus four new or improved bus stops.
Schools at the Heart of the Project

The western section, funded by B&NES Council, connects Combe Down Primary School and St Martin’s Garden Primary School via Mulberry Park along Bradford Road. Work on this section began in mid-July and includes off-road paths, upgraded crossings, and improved pedestrian and cycling routes. Completion is expected by early 2026.
Meanwhile, a new zebra crossing on Claverton Down Road by Ralph Allen School has already been completed in time for the new school term in September, ensuring students can cross safely.
The eastern section of Scholars’ Way, funded jointly by the regional authority and B&NES, will serve areas including Oakley, Copseland, Widcombe Hill, Claverton Down Road, Quarry Farm, and Ralph Allen School. Work is planned for 2026.
Part of a Bigger Picture
Scholars’ Way is supported by the UK Government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement and builds on wider investments in active travel across Bath and the West of England. In July, the regional authority approved £4.7 million for improved walking and cycling in Bath Quays and plans to expand School Streets, cycle hangars, and pedestrian improvements in areas including Twerton and Oldfield Park.
