There were many very happy faces this morning, as King Edward’s School, Bath pupils celebrated another year of excellent GCSE results, with more than three quarters of entries (76%) at grades 9-7, well over three times the national average.
The most prevalent grade was once again 9, with almost a third (31%) of entries at this top level. As with last week’s A-Levels, these results continue a run of consistently high outcomes in public examinations and are a just reward for the outstanding efforts of a cohort which faced a very challenging start to their secondary education five years ago.
A third of the year group gained 8 or more 8/9 grades – broadly equivalent to the old A* – with around a quarter securing at least 6 top 9 grades, including 11 pupils – 10% of the cohort – with 9 or more. Many pupils exceeded their own expectations, and they all deserve great praise for the hard work, tenacity, ambition and progress that they have shown over the last few years.
As is so often the case at KES, a great many of these talented pupils have combined their impressive endeavours in the classroom with equally remarkable success on many different fronts outside it.

“It was wonderful to witness the joyous scenes of celebration this morning, and I commend everyone on the dedication and resilience that have helped them to achieve such impressive outcomes. I have no doubt that this group of pupils will go from strength to strength as they move into the Sixth Form, and I wish them all the best as they start the exciting next stage of their educational journey.”
Notable departmental highlights amongst many this year include nearly two thirds of all English entries (Language and Literature) being at grades 8/9, with three quarters or more at that same level being achieved in Geography, History and Further Maths. Over 90% of Physics entries achieved grades 9-7, whilst that benchmark was reached by 97% of all Classics entries (Latin and Greek).
With over 20 talented new pupils due to join the Sixth Form in September, the future for this cohort looks very bright indeed.
