Marksbury Church of England Primary School is celebrating after receiving a generous grant from The Hockey Youth Trust, which has enabled the school to purchase a brand-new set of hockey sticks for its pupils.
The Trust, which supports schools and junior clubs across the country, helps make hockey more accessible by funding starter kits, equipment, and other essential resources. At Marksbury, the new sticks have already made a big impact, with children across the school taking part in lessons and after-school sessions. Hockey has always been one of the most popular sports at the school, so pupils are delighted to have the new kit.
Mrs Lewis, Marksbury’s sports teacher, said the school is hugely grateful for the support. She added that the wheeled bag included in the kit has been a particular hit with staff, making it much easier to transport the equipment to the sports field.
Hockey has long been a favourite activity in the local community, with many parents recalling fond memories of time on the pitch—and some still playing today. One standout example is a Marksbury Year One mum who this summer proudly earned her first cap with the Welsh Veteran Hockey Squad, having played the sport since childhood.
As well as being a fun and inclusive sport, hockey promotes a healthy lifestyle for children. It boosts cardiovascular health, coordination, and strength, while also encouraging teamwork, strategy, and quick decision-making. At Marksbury, where team sports are central to school life, pupils of all ages benefit from playing together, learning the value of cooperation and community spirit.
Thanks to The Hockey Youth Trust, Marksbury pupils are not only enjoying active play but are also connecting with a sport that has deep local roots. With the new equipment, the school looks forward to fostering enthusiasm for hockey and perhaps even inspiring the next generation of players.
