A new Theraplay Families group is set to begin this September, offering support to parents and carers of children aged under eight.
The six-week course will be delivered virtually via Microsoft Teams, running on Tuesdays from 16th September, 10.30–11.30am.
Based on the Theraplay® approach, the programme helps parents and carers strengthen their relationship with their child, develop strategies to manage challenges, and explore ways of enhancing emotional connection, trust and joy at home.
The weekly sessions cover topics including:
-
An introduction to Theraplay
-
Structure and Nurture
-
Relationship stress and challenge activities
-
Sensory processing
-
Theraplay and emotional regulation
-
Bringing it all together
Each workshop is designed to suit different learning styles, combining discussion, video clips and shared resources. The approach is inclusive and neurodiversity-affirming, with practical activities for families to try between sessions.
Parents who have taken part previously describe the course as “eye-opening” and “transformative”:
-
“I now have so much more understanding and empathy for my child and why she does what she does.”
-
“We feel loads more connected and my child feels understood and nurtured.”
-
“I feel I’m not alone in this and learning more strategies to help my son.”
Referrals to the Theraplay Families group can be made via the Bath and North East Somerset Council’s Children’s Centre Services request for support form. Families will be contacted ahead of the start date to ensure the course can best meet their needs.
