Two new road crossings have been completed in the south of Bath to make walking, wheeling and cycling safer and more accessible for children and families.
Pupils from Ralph Allen School joined deputy head teacher Seb Witts and Councillor Lucy Hodge, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Transport Delivery, to mark the completion of the new signalised crossing outside the school. A second crossing has also been completed on Frome Road.
Both improvements form part of the Scholars’ Way project, which is creating a safe active travel route connecting schools, colleges and residential areas across south Bath. The route is designed to support more families to choose walking, wheeling or cycling rather than travelling by car.
The western section of the route will link Combe Down and St Martin’s Garden Primary School via Mulberry Park. It includes new off-road paths, upgraded crossings and improved facilities for people on foot and on bikes.
Construction on this section began in July and is expected to be completed by spring 2026. Work is now underway on a new segregated cycleway along Midford Road and wider footways on Mulberry Way.
Councillor Lucy Hodge said, “It’s fantastic to see the Scholars’ Way project taking shape with these new crossings, which will make a real difference to how children and families travel to school.
“Creating safer, more accessible routes for walking, wheeling and cycling is central to our commitment to sustainable transport and healthier communities. I’m proud that Bath & North East Somerset Council is investing in infrastructure that supports young people and helps reduce reliance on cars.”
Helen Godwin, Mayor of the West of England, added, “We all want better, safer walking, wheeling and cycling routes for people’s everyday journeys. I am delighted to see these two crossings open and know they will be well used by families on the daily school run.
“Active travel has real health benefits and helps cut pollution, which we here in the West Country really care about.”
Bath & North East Somerset Council says it is working with contractors to minimise disruption during construction, with mitigation measures in place to manage traffic safely.
