Paws-itively welcoming: Wiltshire Council launches Dog Friendly Directory

Wiltshire Council has unleashed a new initiative to get tails wagging across the county — the Wiltshire Dog Friendly Directory. The free scheme aims to make Wiltshire a more welcoming place for dogs and their owners, helping four-legged friends feel right at home in their local communities.

Dogs thrive on social interaction, new experiences and varied environments, especially during their formative years. By reducing the time dogs spend alone at home and increasing opportunities for mental stimulation, the Directory aims to support healthier, happier pets while promoting responsible dog ownership.

With more than a third of UK households now owning a dog, the demand for pet-inclusive spaces has never been greater. The Dog Friendly Directory connects owners with local businesses that welcome dogs, making it easier for people to plan outings, holidays and everyday activities with their pets. Participating venues will display a distinctive paw print sticker, making it simple for dog owners to spot dog-friendly locations across Wiltshire.

For businesses, inclusion in the Directory is completely free, offering valuable promotion and increased visibility to dog owners actively seeking welcoming venues. From cafés and shops to accommodation providers and attractions, any business that welcomes dogs is encouraged to sign up.

Cllr Paul Sample JP, Cabinet Member for Environment, Climate and Waste, is a dog owner himself — a ‘dog dad’ to Fergus, a six-year-old Japanese Chin cross.

“Dogs have always been part of my personal life since I lived on a farm at Sherston in the 1960s,” said Paul. “I know that dogs are part of the family for many people in Wiltshire. This scheme is a fantastic way to support their wellbeing and boost local businesses.

“The Dog Friendly Directory is about more than convenience. It’s about creating a community where dogs and their owners feel welcome and supported. I encourage businesses across the county to get involved — let’s make Wiltshire a truly dog-friendly place.”

Dog owners can explore the Directory online to discover welcoming venues and enjoy more shared experiences with their pets.
