Unpaid carers across Bath and North East Somerset are being encouraged to prepare for the colder months by making the most of the financial and practical support available through The Carers’ Centre.
The charity is urging anyone caring for a loved one to explore ways to maximise their income, access energy advice and apply for grants that could help them avoid falling into debt this winter. Support includes free Winter Warm packs, one-to-one guidance and in-person drop-in sessions taking place throughout December.

A key part of the offer is the chance to Chat with Charlie, the Centre’s dedicated advisor who provides personalised money guidance for unpaid carers. His support is delivered through the national Carer Money Matters scheme, funded by Carers Trust, which has already helped 854 local households since launching a year ago.
“Managing your money well means making small changes that influence the bigger picture,” says Charlie. “I can help you identify those little wins that really add up. Please just give me a call and we’ll see what we can do.”
Carer Money Matters can help carers check benefit eligibility, review energy use and explore grants from energy companies. It can also support families facing specific challenges.
One local carer, Juliette, was applying to become a detective after being made redundant twice in a year. Frequent washing due to her child’s additional needs meant high water bills, adding extra pressure. After reviewing the family’s household costs, the scheme provided a £500 grant to help see them through winter while she waited for her application to progress.
“The Carers’ Centre has been a pillar of support for our family, helping us with our energy bills, providing food vouchers and advice, which really took the pressure off during a very difficult time,” Juliette said. “We are extremely grateful for the help that the team there have given to us and so many other families.”
With the winter period now well underway, carers who would like to speak with Charlie can call the Support Line on 0800 0388 885 (Monday–Friday, 9am–1pm) or request a call-back at www.banescarerscentre.org.uk/Carer-Money-Matters.
Carers can also attend upcoming face-to-face sessions to pick up a free Winter Warm pack – including a blanket, gloves and handwarmer – and access help with applying for grants. Dates will be announced on The Carers’ Centre website and social channels over the coming days.
The Carers’ Centre supports unpaid carers of all ages across Bath and North East Somerset, helping them focus on their wellbeing, connect with others and navigate the challenges of caring for someone with illness, disability, mental health needs or age-related conditions.
