Students and staff at Wiltshire College & University Centre were treated to a surprise visit last week when the Grinch himself appeared on the Salisbury campus for a festive filming project – bringing laughter, mischief and plenty of Christmas cheer.
The much-loved character was brought to life by 17-year-old Izzy Barnett from Marlborough, a Performing and Production Arts Level 3 student who spent the day roaming the site in full costume, surprising passers-by, posing for photos and creating light-hearted chaos along the way.

Izzy explained that the project offered a brilliant opportunity to put her developing skills into practice. ‘I relied heavily on improvisation and was able to build small scenes myself,’ she said, adding that the silent role meant she turned to expressive movement. ‘Because I wasn’t speaking, I used expressive body language to show how the Grinch was feeling.’
She said she jumped at the chance to take part, not only to embrace a well-known character but also to spread some joy across campus. ‘I thought it would be funny to impersonate someone that creates so much chaos and mischief, as well as trying to make everyone feel more in the Christmas spirit. I enjoy making people laugh and it was fun to be able to create my own version of a well-known character.’
Students and staff responded with huge enthusiasm, stopping Izzy for photos, waving as she passed and enjoying the unexpected moments of festive fun.
The experience also supports Izzy’s ambitions beyond college as she prepares to continue her training. ‘After this year I’m planning on attending university to study Acting, so I can continue my passion for performing and hopefully turn it into a career,’ she said. ‘In the meantime, I have upcoming shows within my course, including my final major project, which will be a fully scripted play.’
The festive filming forms part of Wiltshire College & University Centre’s seasonal content and showcases how Performing and Production Arts students are encouraged to apply their learning in creative, real-world situations – all while spreading Christmas cheer.
