Pupils at St Mary’s school in Broughton Gifford enjoyed a memorable insight into politics and democracy when local MP Dr Brian Mathew visited as part of UK Parliament Week.
During his visit on 28 November, Dr Mathew was welcomed by the school council, who prepared a series of thoughtful and inquisitive questions about his work in parliament and his role in the local community. He shared open and engaging answers, encouraging the children to think about leadership, responsibility and the ways they can make a difference in their own roles.

“The pupils were particularly interested in issues affecting local families,” said Jo Donovan, Assistant Principal at St Mary’s School. “One discussion centred on how changes to farm inheritance tax could impact the lives of children whose parents work in agriculture. They also asked about budgeting, local initiatives and what life is really like inside parliament.”
Dr Mathew was so impressed by the pupils’ enthusiasm that he offered to fund a trip for them to visit the Houses of Parliament and see politics in action for themselves.
Staff said the visit was a brilliant opportunity for pupils to develop their understanding of government and democracy, while showcasing the school’s values of curiosity and respect.
Dr Mathew was at the school for 45 minutes before visiting sister schools at Seend and St George’s, Semington.
