The Year 5 and 6 boys’ football team at Weston All Saints Church of England Primary School (WASPS) in Bath have been crowned champions of this year’s Bath & North East Somerset ESFA Tournament – despite a dramatic 70-mile dash to make the final.

The tournament concluded at Odd Down on 20 November, right in the middle of the Year 6 residential to Kilve Court in Somerset. Determined not to miss out, teacher and coach Dan Bennett, supported by one of the team’s parents, organised a rapid return trip to get the players back in time. In total, the boys clocked up around 140 miles travelling to and from the residential so they could represent their school.

Their commitment paid off in style. WASPS remained unbeaten throughout the competition and didn’t concede a single goal on their route to the trophy. They sealed victory with a 1–0 win over Combe Down Primary School in a closely fought final.

Dan Bennett, Year 6 teacher and coach, said, “The whole squad showed a brilliant attitude and played some excellent football, and we’re excited to see them represent Bath in the county championships in January.”

Team captain Olly added, “It was amazing! We worked really hard and supported each other the whole way. Winning without conceding a goal made it even better.”

The team will now go forward to the county championships early next year.
