A new arts initiative created by two Bradford on Avon mums is set to make a big splash this month with a packed weekend of family fun, live performance and hands-on activities.
Joyful On Avon is the brainchild of local parents Felicity and Georgia. Both have backgrounds in performing arts and education, and were inspired to bring high-quality, creative events to families in and around the town.
The new venture launches on Friday 23 January with a Snuggly Storytime Pyjama Party at The West Barn. Children are invited to turn up in their PJs for a cosy evening of interactive storytelling, music and fun, with a hot chocolate and cookie included for every child.
There will also be books available to buy, including titles signed especially for the event by bestselling author Julia Donaldson.
Felicity said, “As mums ourselves, we know how important it is to find activities that work around family life. That’s why many of our events run in the afternoons or early evenings, where little ones can join in, have a great time and still get home for bedtime.”
Saturday sees the action move to the Wiltshire Music Centre for a full-on Musical Theatre Mass-Karaoke. The afternoon session is designed for families and younger children, with everyone invited to sing along to feel-good favourites from Mary Poppins, Frozen, Oliver and The Sound of Music.
Later in the evening, the stage belongs to the grown-ups – or those eager to belt out the big hits from Phantom, Les Mis, Hamilton, Wicked and Cabaret. A live band, character performers and lyrics projected on a giant screen promise a West End experience without leaving Wiltshire.
On Sunday morning, families can head to St Laurence School Hall for Scottish Dancing with a live ceilidh band. The session features dancing for all ages, as well as crafts where children can design and create their own tartan before taking part in a parade.
There will also be a Scottish tuck shop and a spot of haggis rolling for those keen to try something new.
Rounding off the weekend on Sunday afternoon is a special treat for theatre fans. Tom Babbage, fresh from performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company, will lead a relaxed Shakespeare Workshop focused on playing a scene.
The workshop is suitable for adults as well as GCSE and A-Level students, and no acting experience or prior knowledge is required. Participants will explore rehearsal techniques used in professional productions, with a script provided and a free drink and nibbles included.
Georgia explained, “Our aim is to bring exciting arts experiences right into the heart of our community. People shouldn’t have to travel miles to enjoy brilliant music, theatre and storytelling.”
Looking ahead, Joyful On Avon hopes to build on its launch success with one or two events every month, ranging from live music to creative workshops and more opportunities for children and adults to get involved.
