As the new year begins, many families across Bath and North East Somerset are taking stock of what 2026 could bring.
For young adults looking for their first paid role – and for parents returning to work after a break raising children – local support is available through Skills Connect, a free service designed to help residents develop confidence, build employability skills and find work that suits their needs.
Formerly known as Future Bright and the Employment and Skills Pod, Skills Connect now brings these programmes together under one name, making it easier for residents to access the help they need when thinking about the next step in employment.
Support for every stage of work and career
Life circumstances can change quickly, and many people find themselves reassessing their future.
Some want a better work-life balance, while others are keen to increase their hours, move into a new sector or simply take the first step into employment.
Skills Connect offers practical support for anyone aged 18 or over who is unemployed, self-employed or already in work and wanting to progress.
The programme can help residents to:
• Find suitable and meaningful employment.
• Explore new roles and career paths.
• Boost income and increase working hours.
• Grow skills and confidence at a pace that feels manageable.
Real people making real progress
One local participant, Alex, approached Skills Connect after several years out of work. With one-to-one guidance, personalised coaching and access to training and volunteering opportunities, Alex was able to rebuild confidence and move closer to long-term employment.
“Support from Skills Connect has changed everything for me. I really believe I have a happy future in store,” Alex shared.
Stories like this are becoming increasingly common, with residents of all ages discovering the value of friendly, practical support and encouragement.
