Springmead launches new Citizenship Lunchtime initiative

Springmead School in Frome has launched a new Citizenship Lunchtime programme, bringing pupil leadership, community action and shared responsibility into the school day, including committee work, village litter picks and a whole-school community lunch.

Springmead School in Frome is launching a brand new initiative this term that places pupil voice, responsibility and community spirit right at the centre of the school day.

Once every half term, Citizenship Lunchtime will provide dedicated time for pupil leadership teams – including the School Council, Eco Committee, Reading Ambassadors and Digital Leaders – to come together in a purposeful way.

These meetings are designed to deepen each group’s role in shaping school life, offering pupils the chance to share ideas, make decisions and see how their contributions directly influence the school community.

Not every pupil will belong to a committee each half term, but every child will take part in at least two groups across the year. When pupils are not attending committee meetings, they will take part in an alternative activity.

This half term, children will head out on a guided walk around Beckington for a community litter pick. The school says this simple yet meaningful activity helps pupils develop pride in their local area while building awareness of their role in the wider community. It is also a valuable opportunity to enjoy the outdoors together.

Once committees and activities conclude, the whole school will come together for a shared community lunch. This will mark a chance to connect, celebrate achievements and recognise the positive impact of pupils’ efforts.

Springmead believes Citizenship Lunchtime is a powerful way to help children understand how communities function, how responsibilities are shared and how even small actions can create lasting change.

The initiative also aligns closely with National Curriculum expectations for citizenship, giving pupils real-life opportunities to collaborate, take responsibility and contribute to the world beyond the classroom.
