Families across Wiltshire are being encouraged to make the most of quality time together in the water this spring, with a wide range of parent-and-child swimming sessions and the return of a popular free swimming initiative.
Wiltshire Council’s leisure centres are offering something for all ages and abilities, from relaxed family swims to structured parent-and-child sessions designed to help little ones build water confidence alongside mum or dad.
With the Easter holidays approaching, it’s an ideal opportunity for families to swap screens for splash time, whether that’s introducing babies and toddlers to the pool or enjoying a fun session together as a family.
Alongside these sessions, the council has confirmed that its free swimming initiative will return following a successful pilot last year. The scheme offers additional support for families, helping more children access swimming during the school holidays.
Eligible primary and secondary-aged children who receive benefits-related free school meals will be able to enjoy one free swim per week during the school holidays. This adds up to as many as 13 free swims across the year, giving families more opportunities to stay active without added cost.
Cllr Mel Jacob, Cabinet Member for Communities, said, “Spring is a great time for residents to refresh their routines, and swimming is one of the most welcoming and inclusive activities offered in our leisure centres. It brings lots of benefits from supporting overall fitness and mobility to boosting confidence in the water and providing a calm space to unwind.”
For parents, the benefits go beyond fitness. Swimming sessions can help children develop essential life skills, improve confidence, and create valuable shared experiences in a relaxed, supportive environment.
Cllr Jon Hubbard, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, added, “The free swimming initiative is a really positive offer for eligible children and their families. It gives young people the opportunity to stay active and have fun at their local leisure centre during the school holidays, and we’re pleased to be able to offer this to them.
“The scheme also helps children build confidence in the water while taking part in an activity that’s both enjoyable and beneficial. We hope those who are eligible will make the most of the offer and enjoy their time in the pool.”
Families can find full details of swimming sessions, timetables and holiday activities by visiting the council’s Leisure Hub online or contacting their local leisure centre.
