The report highlights personal development as a particular strength, noting that ‘the school’s personal development and wellbeing provision is a strength. It is rich, well structured and enhances the curriculum for all pupils, including those who are disadvantaged.’ Inspectors added that ‘pastoral support is highly effective’ and ‘underpinned by strong relationships and a restorative approach,’ helping pupils feel safe and supported.

Pupils are given a wide range of opportunities to develop leadership skills and a sense of citizenship. Inspectors found that children vote for representatives on the ‘eco’ and ‘chaplaincy’ councils and ‘develop leadership skills through roles such as play leaders and sports leaders.’

Educational visits, including trips to the Houses of Parliament and Hampton Court Palace, enrich pupils’ understanding of national heritage. Activities across faiths, the arts and sport enable children to make ‘astute connections between different beliefs.’

Inclusion is another key strength. Inspectors reported that ‘leaders have cultivated an inclusive culture in which pupils’ needs are identified with accuracy and considered carefully when shaping provision.’ Pupils with special educational needs and disabilities access the same ambitious curriculum as their peers, with additional support where needed.

Teaching and curriculum design were described as ambitious and well sequenced. The report states that ‘leaders have adopted an ambitious and broad curriculum. Pupils build on their prior knowledge across subjects from early years to the end of key stage 2.’

Pupils described their school as a ‘kind school’ that is ‘friendly, warm and supportive’

Early years provision was praised for giving children ‘a successful start to their education and a secure foundation for future learning.’ Inspectors found that staff create an environment where ‘children feel safe, secure, stimulated and happy, enabling them to thrive.’

Behaviour and attendance were also commended. Inspectors observed ‘clear and high expectations for pupils’ behaviour,’ resulting in ‘a calm, respectful and orderly environment in which pupils feel known, supported and valued.’ Pupils described their school as a ‘kind school’ that is ‘friendly, warm and supportive,’ adding that bullying is rare and dealt with quickly.

Leadership and governance were recognised as effective, with ‘ambitious expectations for all pupils to do well’ and a clear vision supported by careful use of resources.

Lucy Buckland, Headteacher of St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, said, “We are extremely proud that the report reflects the high standards, dedication and commitment that our whole school community has worked tirelessly to achieve.

“Over the past eight years, our staff have invested enormous time and effort into continually improving the school, strengthening our curriculum and ensuring that our children receive the very best education and care. This report is a real recognition of that hard work, and we are all delighted with the outcomes.”

Helen Taylor, CEO of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, said, “Huge congratulations to everyone at St Mary’s on this wonderful achievement. It’s a testament to the dedication of the staff, pupils, parents and wider community.”

The inspection confirms that St Mary’s Catholic Primary School now provides a safe, inclusive and ambitious environment where pupils can thrive both academically and personally.
