Mini Police inspire community spirit at St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School

Pupils at St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School in Midsomer Norton are building confidence and community spirit through a hands-on Mini Police programme.

Young pupils in Midsomer Norton are proving that big community impact can start small, thanks to a hands-on Mini Police initiative at St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School.

Children from years 4, 5 and 6 have taken on the role of Mini Police Officers this term, working closely with Mendip Neighbourhood Policing to learn about community safety, responsibility and teamwork.

The programme gives pupils a real-world insight into policing and civic duty, while helping them understand how their actions can positively influence the community around them.

Through practical activities and engagement with local officers, the children have been building confidence, developing leadership skills and strengthening their understanding of respect and responsibility.

The initiative is part of the school’s wider focus on nurturing well-rounded pupils, complementing other activities such as its Acts of Kindness Celebration.

Ellen Croker, headteacher at St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School, said, “We’re thrilled with the enthusiasm and dedication our pupils have shown as Mini Police. Beyond learning about community safety, they are growing in confidence, taking initiative, and understanding the impact they can have on the world around them. It’s wonderful to see them engaging with their community in such a meaningful way.”

Helen Taylor, CEO of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, said, “This programme is a fantastic way for young people to see the real-world impact of kindness, responsibility, and teamwork. The Mini Police are not just learning about community safety, they’re becoming active, engaged citizens who understand the difference they can make every day.”
