More foster carers urgently needed in Bath and North East Somerset

Bath & North East Somerset Council is calling for more foster carers during Foster Care Fortnight as demand for local foster homes continues to rise.

Bath & North East Somerset Council is marking Foster Care Fortnight by celebrating local foster carers and urging more residents to consider opening their homes to children in need.

This year’s theme, ‘This is Fostering’, highlights the everyday moments that can make a lasting difference to children and young people.

Bath & North East Somerset Council is calling for more foster carers during Foster Care Fortnight as demand for local foster homes continues to rise.

Local foster carers have shared some of the moments that have stayed with them throughout their fostering journey. One said, “When [their foster child] came to us they had never danced, and when we took them to a wedding they danced for the first time.”

Another shared, “Going to the school play at Christmas and seeing his face light up with the most beautiful smile, and waving when he saw me in the audience.”

The council says more foster homes are urgently needed to help children of all ages stay close to their schools, friends and communities when they are unable to live at home.

The council’s Fostering Families service, which helps parents care for their children safely at home, has recently been nominated for two MJ Awards and is being recognised nationally as an example of best practice.

Eleven families in Bath and North East Somerset are currently receiving intensive support through the scheme, helping parents build confidence and stability within the family home. Sixteen Fostering Families carers have now been approved.

Paul May, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said, “Foster carers make an incredible, life-changing difference through the small, everyday moments that help children feel safe and valued. As demand continues to rise, we urgently need more people to step forward.

“By fostering with the council, you’ll receive dedicated training, ongoing support and a competitive allowance, and you’ll play a vital role in helping children stay connected to their schools, friends and communities.”

As a not-for-profit provider, the council offers regular payments, a 25% discount on council tax, comprehensive training and ongoing support for foster carers.

In February, the council invested £500,000 to fund home alterations for existing foster carers, helping them care for more children.
