As young people face an increasing number of choices after school, Springmead School is helping pupils develop the skills, confidence and curiosity needed to make informed decisions about their future.
Headteacher Sally Cox says the changing landscape of higher education and employment is influencing how schools think about preparing children for life beyond the classroom.
“As Headteacher, I have been very aware of the changing landscape of post-secondary education and the conversations taking place around young people’s futures,” said Sally Cox.
“While university continues to be a popular route, today’s young people are increasingly thoughtful in their choices, considering value, employability and the many alternatives available to them. There is a clear shift towards flexibility, real-world relevance and pathways that reflect individual strengths, rather than simply following tradition.

At Springmead School, staff believe preparation for future success starts from the earliest stages of a child’s education. The school’s curriculum combines strong academic foundations with a broad range of enrichment opportunities, outdoor learning experiences and activities designed to develop essential life skills.
“Our aim is to spark a genuine love of learning through a rich and engaging curriculum that nurtures both academic success and personal development,” said Sally.
“With a strong focus on enrichment, outdoor learning and breadth of experience, our pupils develop confidence, curiosity and resilience – qualities that are vital in an ever-changing world.”
Springmead also works to help pupils understand how classroom learning connects to life beyond school. One example is the school’s annual careers event, where parents share insights into their professions and experiences, giving pupils an early introduction to the world of work and the many opportunities available to them.
Sally said, “Making meaningful connections between learning and life beyond the classroom is incredibly important. Our annual careers event opens children’s eyes to the many possibilities ahead and helps them begin to develop a real sense of purpose.”
She added, “By blending strong academic foundations with personal development and early exposure to the world of work, we aim to equip children not only for success at senior school, but to make thoughtful, informed and confident choices about their future.”
