Some theatre productions begin the moment the lights dim. At The Egg, The Secret Garden begins much earlier than that.
Before the story unfolds, handcrafted fabric puppets wander through the auditorium, delighting children and introducing them to the magical world they are about to enter. The cast then explains what to expect throughout the performance, from louder moments and darker lighting to the freedom to move seats or take a break if needed. It is a thoughtful introduction that immediately puts families at ease.
Based on Frances Hodgson Burnett’s beloved classic, this adaptation follows Mary Lennox, a lonely young girl sent to live with her uncle after the death of her parents. As she discovers a hidden garden tucked away on the estate, she embarks on a journey of friendship, healing and hope.
While remaining faithful to the original story, the production presents these timeless themes in a fresh and engaging way that resonates with today’s young audiences.
At the heart of the production is an outstanding ensemble of six performers, each taking on multiple roles with remarkable skill. Their seamless character changes are almost imperceptible, allowing the audience to remain immersed in the story. Live singing and musicianship further enhance the performances, adding warmth and richness throughout.
The visual storytelling is equally impressive. The handcrafted set transforms the stage into a magical secret garden, while imaginative staging, clever choreography and beautifully designed puppets become characters in their own right. Together, they create a world full of wonder without relying on elaborate special effects.
Actors appear from unexpected corners of the auditorium, disappearing into the scenery before reappearing elsewhere and blurring the line between audience and performance.
What makes this production especially memorable is how effortlessly accessibility and storytelling work hand in hand. Flexible seating, sensory considerations and a reassuring introduction ensure every child can experience the story in their own way, creating an atmosphere where families can simply relax and enjoy the performance together.
After the performance, I spoke with Marjorie, who regularly takes her granddaughter to children’s theatre across the area. She described it as, “`by far the most welcoming and thoughtfully designed family theatre experience” they had attended, a sentiment that echoed my own.
That commitment to inclusion extends beyond the stage. The Secret Garden also forms part of The Egg’s wider Secret Gardens initiative, bringing creative projects into schools, hospitals and community spaces across the South West. The beautifully decorated foyer, created with local families and volunteers, extends the experience beyond the stage.
More than a faithful adaptation of a beloved children’s classic, The Secret Garden is a reminder of how powerful children’s theatre can be when exceptional storytelling, imagination and genuine care for young audiences come together. It is the kind of production that stays with families long after they leave the theatre.
