An RUH Bath staff member and her friend are preparing to cycle 150 miles on decorated trikes while dressed as Mario and Luigi to raise money for the hospital’s paediatric ward.
Sarah Stewart, who works in the RUH Enhanced Mental Health Care Team, will join her friend Vicki for the three-day journey from Brighton to Weymouth. The pair will cover around 50 miles each day from Friday 7 to Sunday 9 August.
Money raised through the challenge will support the creation of a new de-escalation room on the children’s ward. The safe, calming and sensory-friendly space will support children and young people experiencing a mental health crisis.
Sarah said, “As healthcare staff, I’ve seen first-hand how frightening and overwhelming crisis situations can be for children and their families.
“This dedicated de-escalation room will provide a peaceful environment where young patients can feel safe, supported and cared for during some of their most difficult moments.”
Sarah and Vicki will complete the challenge dressed as Mario and Luigi, with their decorated trikes and journey shared through TikTok and social media. They hope to raise £2,000 towards the project.
Vicki said, “It’s such an amazing cause and both my kids suffer with their mental health. I’ve seen how bad it can get, so if I can help them to help just one child, it’s worth it. It sounds cheesy, but it’s true.”
Friends and family will accompany the pair in a support vehicle, while businesses are also helping with preparations. Clo Clo Fragrance is providing pamper products, while Spartan Gym in Chippenham has offered training membership and nutrition plans. Hotels along the route are also providing free or discounted accommodation.
Sarah and Vicki plan to collect further donations at pubs and other venues during the journey.
