The Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution is inviting families to enjoy a summer packed with free creative activities as part of its Academy of Imagination programme.
Running throughout August, the programme offers children the chance to explore photography, storytelling, art, games and science-inspired activities at BRLSI’s home in Queen Square, Bath.
The activities are inspired by Worlds Apart, the organisation’s current exhibition exploring the invention of photography and featuring images from Bath and China.
Young visitors can take part in guided photography walks around Bath, follow a photo-themed trail through the exhibition and experiment with a Camera Obscura to discover how images are created. Families can also enjoy a range of drop-in activities based on photographs featured in the exhibition.
Creative youngsters can develop their artistic skills during fossil drawing workshops focused on line, texture and tone, while budding writers can join a storytelling workshop inspired by characters including the Twerton Dolphin.
There is also the opportunity to learn Mancala, one of the world’s oldest strategy games, and enjoy hands-on activities inspired by the exhibition’s images of ancient China.
Special events taking place during the summer include photography walks on Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 August, a story-making workshop on Monday 24 August and a fossil drawing workshop on Tuesday 25 August.
All activities are free, although advance booking is required for some sessions. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Academy of Imagination activities take place at BRLSI, 16 Queen Square, Bath. The venue is open from 10am to 4pm.
