More than 60 volunteers came together to help rejuvenate the gardens, woodland and grounds at St Mary’s School Broughton Gifford.
Parents, children and staff gave up part of their summer holidays to take part in the community working day on Saturday 8 August, helping to create new outdoor learning and play spaces for pupils.
One of the main projects was the expansion of the school garden, where pupils grow crops including sweetcorn, runner beans, herbs and fruit. Volunteers also installed a new wildlife pond and created a living willow arbour.
Further improvements are planned for September, including additional outdoor seating to provide another learning space and a new water play wall.
Work also took place in the school woodland, where volunteers cleared paths and learning areas and created additional play features for children to enjoy. The project was made possible after more than £3,000 was raised through the school’s sponsored ‘Mary-thon’ run in April.
The school said the volunteer day was a great opportunity to see the fundraising turned into practical improvements for pupils, while bringing together families, staff and members of the wider village community. It was also a chance to welcome some of the new families whose children will be joining St Mary’s in September, with several getting involved in the day’s work.
The school thanked everyone who supported the project, including the staff who volunteered during their summer holiday, as well as the wider Broughton Gifford community for helping make the improvements possible.
