Pupils at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Chippenham have showcased their creativity and performance skills at the school’s annual Poetry Slam.
Young poets from across the school took to the stage to perform poems from memory in front of family members, friends and special guest judges from St Augustine’s Catholic College in Trowbridge. The judging panel praised the creativity and confidence demonstrated by the children, with Evie and Gloria named as this year’s Poetry Slam winners.
The annual event is part of St Mary’s work to develop pupils’ enjoyment of reading, writing and language, while encouraging them to become confident communicators and creative thinkers.
Through the school’s English curriculum, children are given opportunities to write for different audiences, explore their own ideas and develop their skills as readers, writers and storytellers.
Lucy Buckland, Headteacher at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, said, “Our Poetry Slam is always a wonderful opportunity for children to share their creativity and see the impact their words can have. Watching pupils perform poems in front of an audience was a real joy, and we were incredibly proud of the imagination and effort they showed.
“At St Mary’s, we want every child to develop a love of language and feel confident expressing themselves. Events like this give pupils the chance to celebrate creativity and discover the power of their own voices.”
St Mary’s Catholic Primary School is part of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust.
