SUMMARY:The Quilts of Gee's Bend at the American Museum
DESCRIPTION:Collection of textile works celebrating African American culture and heritage celebrating the extraordinary work of a group of African American women from a remote river island community in Alabama which embodies a 200-year tradition of making quilts that hold both profound artistic and political significance. \nWith skills and traditions passed down primarily from mother to daughter\, the women of Gee’s Bend have created quilts that are renowned for their improvisational style\, bold colours\, and abstract designs\, often compared to modernist art movements like abstract expressionism. This exhibition aims to recognise their invaluable contribution to art\, and to ensure that their legacy continues to inspire and enrich future generations.

SUMMARY:The Shape of Care at The Holburne
DESCRIPTION:Created in collaboration with the Gardener’s Lodge Art Group\, IMAGE Group\, Happy Mondays\, artists\, facilitators\, volunteers and staff from Pathways to Wellbeing. inviting us to pause and consider where care lives in our daily routines and how it shapes our sense of belonging. Over the past year\, the Pathways to Wellbeing community has explored what care looks like — it’s presence and absence\, the moments in which it is given or received\, and the ways it can be felt\, witnessed and made visible through making. Presented through personal and powerful responses\, the exhibition celebrates the small\, sustaining gestures that can sometimes be overlooked or undervalued: patient attention\, thoughtful exchanges\, creative connections.

SUMMARY:Powder and Presence at The Holburne
DESCRIPTION:In the 1700s\, pastel rose in popularity as a favoured medium for both professional and amateur artists. Through Venetian and French influence\, British artists embraced pastel for its soft and silky texture – ideally suited to capture the delicate nuances of skin and textiles in portraiture. \nThe new display includes portraits by eighteenth-century pastelists from the Holburne’s own collection. Alongside leading European artists\, such as Jean-Étienne Liotard and Anna Tonelli\, are Bathonian portraitists William Hoare and his son Prince Hoare\, as well as the celebrated draughtsman Thomas Lawrence. Unlike oil\, pastel’s immediacy made it ideal for quick commissions from Bath’s many visitors\, as it required no drying time and a portrait could be completed\, framed\, and ready to take home within hours.
