News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

Pupils at Saltford Primary School recently spent a week celebrating science, technology, engineering and maths across the whole school. The week was full of fascinating, entertaining and engaging events and activities across the school as well as visits from local organisations such as Bath University, Ceca, Dyson and Wessex Water.

The week was launched by Guy Jones, Science Lead Practitioner for Wellsway Multi-Academy Trust (WMAT), presenting a whole school assembly on chemistry, which was followed by 60 Year 2 pupils visiting IKB and 63 Year 5 pupils visiting the Wellsway school science labs.

An important part of the week was the involvement of local organisations such as Bath University, Ceca and Wessex Water. A group of Bath University students representing the Women’s Engineering Society @WES1919 put the Year 6 children’s engineering skills to the test with straw tower building; Ceca ran two highly engaging workshops in the school hall, one for Y4 and one for Y5; and Dr Caroline Perkins, a parent of one of our pupils, ran a workshop with Y6 children on lifesaving.

The school’s own staff were also busy creating STEM-related activities for all pupils, including a special assembly on the origin of baked beans and ‘Dyson Day’, using resources from Dyson and focusing on this local engineering success.

The final day of the week featured a sharing assembly, where each class named its ‘scientist of the week’, before parents were invited into the hall for an open afternoon where they could appreciate all the work completed by our pupils.
