News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

Bristol Aquarium’s annual stock-take is taking place this weekend (Saturday January 19 to Sunday January 20) with its own version of a ‘fishy census!’

Throughout the weekend, staff at the city centre aquarium are inviting visitors to help spot and record the number of certain species including sharks, rays and seahorses.

The experts at the aquarium will then carry out an official check and the child who is the most accurate will win a free family membership to visit as many times as they like in 12 months.

Hayley Foulkes, Commercial Manager at Bristol Aquarium, said, “Every January we officially count our stock numbers and like to invite our visitors to help – its great fun!

“Obviously some creatures are easier to count than others; the rays are usually fairly straightforward because they often come up to the glass to greet you, although there are some that hide and camouflage themselves under the sand!

“Seahorses can be a little tricky because there are so many all clung onto one another and hermit crabs are always something of a guesstimate as it’s difficult to tell which shells are inhabited and which are currently vacant!”
