News, events and schools' information for families across Bath and West Wiltshire

Christmas can be a challenging time for separated parents trying to manage childcare arrangements. Matthew Roberts, Associate Solicitor – Family, at Wansbroughs, offers a few tips to help make the festive period as trouble-free as possible

As we jingle all the way towards Christmas, we would like to offer our top three tips for effective co-parenting/shared caring over the festive period:

  1. Communication One of the most frequent reasons for the downfall of a successful co-parenting relationship is a breakdown in communication. It is important that communication between carers is clear and coherent. To prevent misunderstandings from occurring, we would advise that arrangements are made in advance, ideally in writing by message or email, so that transport, activities etc. can be confirmed.
  2. Cooperation We appreciate that however good-natured and organised your plans are, it is likely that that the unexpected will happen. In the event of this, we encourage you to work together to reach an amicable solution. Whilst we understand that last-minute changes of plan can often upset the balance of your festive period, we would recommend that you take a child-focused approach to your decision-making.
  3. Compromise If you are struggling to reach an arrangement that is agreeable to all parties, don’t forget that what you do together will be more important to your children than when you do it. We appreciate that the festive season can be filled with emotion and it can be difficult to have to change your usual arrangements but we reiterate the importance of finding a child-friendly solution.

Whilst navigating child arrangements during the festive period can be difficult for adults, it is often strange and unsettling for the children involved. Whatever the final arrangements, we encourage you to be present within the time that you do have and focus on creating a positive atmosphere. And above all, have a very special Christmas.
