Children at King Edward’s School Pre-Prep and Nursery planted a very special tree this morning (14th February) as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy, a unique initiative which invites people across the United Kingdom to ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’ as part of a UK-wide tree planting project to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.
Everyone from individuals to scout and girl guiding groups, villages, cities, counties, schools and corporates have been encouraged to plant trees from October 2021 when the tree planting season begins, through to the end of the Jubilee year in 2022.
Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, Annie Maw, joined the children as their special guest to help plant a flowering cherry Tree, which was kindly donated by Bath & North-East Somerset Council.
After the planting took place, HM Lord-Lieutenant Annie Maw, said, “It is such a pleasure to plant trees to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee because they will last for many years into the future. These children will be able to return, when they reach my kind of age, to see how much ‘their’ tree has grown and reflect on the remarkable service that Her Majesty has given to us all over these last 7 decades. Our nation has grown during Her Majesty’s historical reign just as this tree will have done, and they will be able to feel proud that they planted it.”
Commenting on the planting, Ms Jayne Gilbert, Head Teacher at King Edward’s Pre-Prep and Nursery, said, “We are delighted to be taking part in this wonderful initiative to commemorate Her Majesty’s long reign. Our wonderful outdoor play and learning environment at school serves as a natural extension to our classrooms and allows our children to engage directly with the environment. Planting this new tree today is a further way of encouraging our children to get involved in growing and protecting the green spaces around them.”
The newly planted tree has been uploaded onto an interactive map on the QGC website so that everyone can share and inspire others, as well as creating a green canopy of projects to cover the country. You can view the map at Map & Education Hub – The Queen’s Green Canopy (queensgreencanopy.org)
Two further trees are due to be planted at the Senior and Junior Schools to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.
