Victoria Barnett from Sharp Family Law highlights how couples can now jointly work with one lawyer to navigate their separation together and the impact that this will have on reaching amicable and sustainable agreements
Divorce is rarely straightforward, but there are ways to reduce the family conflict it can cause. And we’re taking the lead by offering a new service that helps couples navigate a divorce and financial settlement… together.
Resolution Together, also known as ‘One Couple, One Lawyer’, follows on from the introduction of joint ‘no fault’ divorce applications – a welcome change in the law made earlier this year, that enables divorcing couples to seek legal advice and assistance jointly and reach amicable arrangements and agreements.
This new service, where one lawyer represents both sides, is something clients have asked us about in the past. The key difference with ‘One Couple, One Lawyer’ is that, in a potentially charged situation, it avoids igniting a drawn-out, stressful conflict. Traditional approaches, where separate legal teams are appointed, can leave couples pursing their own positions rather than their family interests.
As a firm, we’re always exploring new ways of working that can benefit our clients. We’ve already assisted couples who are exploring this new and innovative solution that considers the needs of the whole family – crucially minimising emotional harm to their children. Ultimately, couples who were once close, now have the power to make joint decisions, focus on solving problems, and protect what matters most.
By following the ‘One Couple, One Lawyer’ process, separation and divorce doesn’t have to be complicated or contentious. Instructing one lawyer, rather than two separately, also has a potential cost saving.
Sharp Family Law offers a range of approaches to separation and divorce that suit our clients’ personal circumstances. To learn more about them as well as this new service in Bath, contact one of our lawyers on 01225 448955 or email hidden; JavaScript is required .
